An option payoff chart describes an outcome at a specified time. It does not replace a sensitivity review or an operating description of exercise and assignment. Keeping those three views together makes an option analysis more useful to a portfolio decision.
Separate three questions
The Options Industry Council describes Greeks as model-based estimates of sensitivity to inputs such as the underlying price, implied volatility and time remaining. Delta is not a guaranteed future price change, and a terminal payoff is not an estimate of today’s sale price.
A second question concerns contractual rights. A purchased put gives its holder a right to sell under its terms. A put writer assumes the corresponding obligation if assigned. A premium paid for a long option and premium received for a short option do not create equivalent obligations.
Illustrative scenario: a protective put at expiration
Assume 100 units of an asset are purchased at $100 each and a put covering those same 100 units is purchased with a $95 strike and a $2-per-unit premium. The combined starting cost is $10,200. The following arithmetic values the option at expiration and excludes all fees.
| Asset at expiration | Put payoff | Option net P&L | Combined position P&L |
|---|---|---|---|
| $80 | $1,500 | +$1,300 | −$700 |
| $95 | $0 | −$200 | −$700 |
| $110 | $0 | −$200 | +$800 |
At $80, the put’s $1,500 payoff offsets part of the $2,000 decline in the asset, leaving a $700 combined loss after the premium. At $110, the asset gain remains, reduced by the premium. The example shows a specific payoff structure; it does not establish that a put is the preferred hedge for a particular institution.
Build a usable option review
A concrete deliverable can include the position side, multiplier, strike, expiration, exercise style and settlement terms; a payoff table; and a separate sensitivity matrix. The sensitivity matrix changes price, volatility and remaining time, records the valuation method and distinguishes local approximations from a full revaluation. An operating register assigns responsibility for exercise instructions, assignment notices and any resulting underlying position.
The illustration assumes one put exposure exactly matches the 100-unit holding, sufficient performance of the contract and cash-equivalent terminal valuation. Standardized equity-option contract sizes and other products’ terms must be checked individually. Premium-limited loss for the purchased option considered alone does not describe a written option, another strategy or the complete portfolio. That distinction belongs beside the calculation, where it directly helps the reader interpret the result.
